FPS staff report

Add another title to the Hornets perfect season.

Malvern improved its perfect record to 24-0 for the year with a 75-60 win over the Shadyside Tigers last Saturday afternoon in the Meadowbrook Division IV District championship game at Meadowbrook High School.

Malvern was to play in its first regional tournament game since the 2000 season Tuesday night against Columbiana at the Canton Fieldhouse.

Columbiana won the Struthers district title last Friday night with a 74-67 win over McDonald.

Junior guard Tyler Tucci led the Hornets with 24 points against Shadyside, while senior center Zak Kapron added 22 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. Senior forward Trevor Halter followed with 14 points.

Malvern hit 28-of-53 action shots and 18-of-30 free throws.

The Tigers, which ended a fine season with a 21-3 mark, were led by Billy Merryman with 20 points, while Jared Andes added 12 points and Nathan Butts had 11.

Shadyside hit 22-of-68 shots from the floor and 8-of-12 free throws.

Malvern led 20-11 after the first quarter, 34-27 at halftime and 52-45 going into the final period.

Earlier in the week in the district semifinals, the Hornets romped over Frontier 93-58.

The Hornets hit 36-of-69 shots from the field, held a huge 47-34 advantage on the boards and forced 24 Frontier turnovers.

Kapron led four Malvern players in double figures with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Tucci added 19 points and 12 assists. Sophomore guard Adam Wackerly added 18 points and Halter finished with 14.

Malvern led 17-13 after the first quarter, but outscored the Cougars 53-23 in the second and third quarters to pull away for the lopsided win.
