Consistency picking up for golfers

FPS staff report

The Carrollton High School golf team picked up a pair of Northeastern Buckeye Conference wins last week to bring their season record to 3-4 overall and in league play.

The Warriors opened play last Tuesday with a 154-158 loss to visiting Marlington.

“We shot our best round of the year, but we lost by four strokes to a very good team,” said head coach Gary Cogan. “I was very pleased with the scores that we posted. I said before that we were capable of shooting some good scores like that. The next step is to do that on a consistent basis.”

Zach Riggins led the Warriors with a 36 and Ryan Liptak followed with a 40.

Tony Pozderac and Doug Van Meter each posted 41’s.

Last Wednesday at Skyland Pines, the Warriors defeated Louisville 166-170.

“This was a nice win,” Cogan said. “Beating Louisville on their home course doesn’t happen too often and I was really happy for the effort the guys gave. The guys went out and played well on a course that none of them had ever played on before and came away with a rare road victory.”

Pozderac led the way for the Warriors with a 38, while Van Meter finished with a 41, Riggins a 43 and Brady McClure a 44.

Back home on Thursday, the Warriors defeated Alliance 162-195.

“With the win we finished off a very good week of golf,” Cogan said. “This was by far the most consistent week of golf we have had.”

Pozderac was low for the Warriors with a 37, while Riggins followed with a 40, Dan Tobin a 42, Talen Smith a 43, McClure a 44 and Van Meter a 46.

In junior varsity action, the Warriors are still looking for their first win of the season.

The Warriors fell to Marlington 173-184. Matt Yoder was low for Carrollton with a 43, McClure and Justin Lovett each fired a 46 and Forrest Patterson a 49.

Against Louisville, the Leopards won by the score of 175-186. Smith was low for the Warrior junior varsity with a 42, while Yoder added a 47, Lovett a 48 and Patterson a 49.
