The Carrollton boys and girls cross country teams opened their 2010 seasons by hosting their own invitational last Tuesday afternoon at the Community Field course.
Three teams took part in the event, which was shortened to two miles.
The Lady Warriors won with 22 points, while second place went to Claymont with 34 points. Southern Local also took part, but did not field a girls team.
No results were available for the boys race.
Junior Kelsey Cogan placed first with a time of 12:07, Mary Jo Brown second with a time of 12:57, Taylar Bennett fourth with a time of 13:22, Kailey Patterson seventh with a time of 14:31 and Miranda Graham eighth with a time of 14:43.
Last Saturday, the Lady Warriors took part in the Pickerington North Classic in Pickerington. Carrollton placed 10th overall with 278 points. A total of 311 runners took part in the race.
Cogan ran a strong race and placed second with a time of 20:08. Brown was next in 28th place with a time of 21:54, Bennett 72nd with a time of 23:38, Patterson 92nd with a time of 24:12, Graham 99th with a time of 24:25, Joyce Bell 135th with a time of 25:27 and Dusty Bake 174th with a time of 26:28.
“This was our first 5k race of the season and all the girls ran a strong race,” said head coach Lisa Baker. “We were pleased with the performance of all the girls. From the veterans to the rookies. everyone followed their race plan and now we have our starting point from which we will improve as the season progresses.”
King High School won the team title with 74 points, while Olentangy River Orange was second with 136 and Thomas Worthington third with 145 points. Lauren Goodwin of King won the race, just two seconds quicker that Cogan with a time of 20:06

On the boys side, the Warriors placed fifth out of 15 teams with 208 total points.
Joey Harter paced the Warriors with a fourth place finish with a personal best time of 17:34. He was followed by Jacob Husted in ninth with a time of 17:58, Austin Wolford in 31st place with a time of 19:17, Ethan Harris 45th with a time of 19:38, Allen Jacobson 62nd with a time of 20:10, Travis Stephens 66th with a time of 20:17 and Noah Stertzbach 70th with a time of 20:22.
“We were patient early in the race and moved up well,” said first year head coach Mike Aukerman. “Joey (Harter) and Jacob (Husted) was with him for the first two miles - they worked well together and kept moving by people.”
“Austin (Wolford) ran his first 5k and brought home a plaque. He was excited, and we expect him to keep accumulating hardware in the future.”
“We ran against several D1 teams, and were in fact the 2nd place D2 team, and I feel that this experience will really help us down the road when we race here again at the Regional.”
Fairland won the team championship with 67 points, followed by Thomas Worthington with 91, Big Walnut was third with 109 and Pickerington Central fourth with 121.
Micah Armburst of Big Walnut was the race winner with a time of 16:31.
The boys and girls teams will be at the Newcomerstown Invitational this Saturday. |
