Lady Warriors grab first win of season

The Carrollton Lady Warriors softball team picked up their first win of the 2009 season last Wednesday against visiting St. Thomas Aquinas.

Sophomore pitcher Lexi Sheets struck out 12 St. Thomas batters and drove in two runs with a triple and single to lead the Warriors to a 10-2 victory.

The Warriors scored two in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth, while St. Thomas managed single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Miranda DeGarmo added a single, double and drove in two runs, while Meneely DeGarmo had a double and a pair of RBIs. Gabi Fletcher also had a double, single and two RBIs.

Last Thursday, the Lady Warriors lost a tough 13-8 contest to visiting Northwest.

The Indians scored two runs in the first, three in the second and four each in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Warriors plated one run in second, three in the fourth and four in the bottom of the seventh.

Brooke Keane and Fletcher each singled, doubled and tripled for the Warriors.

The Indians out-hit the Warriors 14-10. Erin White added a triple and three RBIs for Carrollton.

Northwest’s Kassi Stover and Rebekah Morrison each went 4-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and three runs scored. Rachel Deguia added a pair of doubles and three RBIs.

Last Saturday, the Warriors dropped a double header at Claymont. The Mustangs defeated the Warriors 8-3 in the first game and 7-6 in the nightcap.

In game one, the game was tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, but the Mustangs plated five runs in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Claymont added to its lead with two more in the fifth. Carrollton scored its final two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Carla Adams had a single and RBI for the Warriors, while Meneely DeGarmo added a single.

The Warriors were held to just two hits in the game.

In game two, the Warriors started strong scoring four runs in the first inning, but Claymont scored three times in the bottom of the first and added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth. Carrollton scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Mustang lead to one.

Miranda DeGarmo led the Warriors with three singles, while Keane added a double, single and two RBIs. Sheets finished with a double and RBI and Fletcher and Ashley Henry contributed a single and RBI each.
