It was not a very good weekend for area Division III wrestlers at the State Wrestling Championships in Columbus.
The Sandy Valley Cardinals had two representatives and the Malvern Hornets one.
Malvern heavyweight Dominic Chiurco won his first match by pinning Bryan Eyerly from Ontario in 3:16.
However, he did not fare well in his next two matches and was eliminated from the tournament in the second round of consolations.
For the Cardinals, freshman Sam Groff won his second match by a 3-1 decision over Phil Wellington Cleveland St. Joseph 3-1. He dropped his next match to be eliminated from the tournament.
Billy Natale (140) was defeated in his first two matches and eliminated.
Monroeville won the overall championship by a large margin. They finished with 116 points, while Cuyahoga Christian Academy was second with 76, Bedford St. Peter Chanel was third with 63.5, West Jefferson was fourth with 56 and Troy Christian fifth with 40 points.
