Kelsey Cogan ran strong and placed 38th at last Saturday's State Cross Country meet in Columbus.

COLUMBUS - Running with a nagging injury all season Carrollton sophomore Kelsey Cogan gutted out another fine performance to place 38th overall with a time of 20:09.46 at last Saturday’s 32nd annual Girls State Cross Country Division II Championships at Scioto Downs in Columbus.

“Coach Shroyer and I were thrilled with Kelsey’s performance,” said head coach Lisa Baker. “Just running in the State meet is an honor only a few individuals experience and Kelsey has done it twice.”

“Her love for the sport showed when she decided that she would go ahead and run cross country and get the injury repaired at the conclusion of the season. Each race, she put the pain behind her and pushed on, determined to have the best season possible.”

The Minerva Lady Lions also ran in the Division II two races. As a team, the Lions finished in 14th out of 16 teams with 268 points.

Junior Emily Mapes led Minerva with a 15th place finish, after falling about 25-feet from the finish line, with a time of 19:29 to earn All-Ohio honors. She was followed by freshman Kaele Lightfoot in 27th place with a time of 20-minutes flat. Freshman Shelbie Carver was next with a time of 21:32 to place 104th, freshman Heather Tomlinson placed 111th with a time of 21:38, freshman Jessica Stanik ended in 136th place with a time of 22:20 and junior Danyelle Kupfer was 142nd with a time of 22:57.

In the field of 148 runners, the individual championship was won by junior Christina Blair of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy with a time of 18:39. Sophomore Taylor Hatfield of Zane Trace was second with a time of 18:49, and Katie Landwehr from Tipp City was third with a time of 18:55.

Akron St. Vincent, St. Mary won the overall team title with 98 points, St. Clairsville was second with 105 points and CVCA was third with 115 points.

In the girls Division III race, Sandy Valley senior Connie Collins finished 33rd with a time of 20:28.
