Rough week for Carrollton golf

FPS staff report

Carrollton High School golf, Tony Pozderac
Carrollton’s Tony Pozderac shot the Warriors’ first round in the 30’s against Louisville.

The second week of the season was not a good week for the Carrollton varsity boys’ golf team.

The Warriors dropped three Northeastern Buckeye Conference matches to bring their season record to 1-4 overall and in NBC play.

Last Monday, the Warriors visited Marlington at the Tannenhauf Golf Course. The Dukes soundly defeated the Warriors 165-181.

“We had some fairly consistent scores, but the problem was that the scores were consistently high,” said head coach Gary Cogan.

Talen Smith was low for Carrollton with a 41, while Zach Riggins and Taylor Thompson each shot a 46 and Tony Pozderac, Justin Liptak and Brady McClure each finished with a 48.

Last Wednesday, the Warriors were defeated by Louisville 153-173 at Carroll Meadows.

“Louisville is a pretty solid golf program right now,” Cogan noted. “They had four varsity golfers shot in the 30’s and their junior varsity team is shooting in the low 40’s. Tony Pozderac shot our first round in the 30’s this season. Hopefully there will be more rounds like that from him and a couple of the other guys.”

Pozderac was low for the Warriors with a 39. Riggins followed with a 43, Smith a 44, Thompson a 47, McClure a 48 and Justin Liptak a 49.

Last Thursday at the Alliance Country Club, the Warriors fell to Alliance by one stroke, 173-174.

“We lost by a stroke to a team we should have beaten,” Cogan said. “Hopefully this will be a learning experience and we will not let this happen again.”

Pozderac was low for Carrollton with a 41. Riggins and Thompson each shot a 43. Smith and Brady McClure each had a 47 and Ryan Liptak carded a 49.

In junior varsity action last week, the Warriors fell to Marlington 181-230 and to Louisville 168-194. Alliance did not field a junior varsity team.

Against Marlington, Ryan Liptak was low with a 48, while Shawn Wallick had a 55, Adam Bormuth a 56 and Shane Wallick a 71.

Against Louisville, Ryan Liptak was again low for the Warriors with a 41. He was followed by Shawn Wallick with a 48, Forrest Patterson with a 50, Shane Wallick a 55, Doug Van Meter a 57 and Bormuth a 59.

The Warriors were to host West Branch Wednesday and Minerva Thursday. Next week, Carrollton will travel to Northwest Wednesday and host Marlington Thursday.
