| Luke Starre started on the mound for the Warriors last Thursday night at Canton South. He also had a two-run home run in the game. |
The Carrollton varsity baseball team managed to get two games in last week between the snow and rain.
The Warriors dropped both games to bring their season record to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference.
Last Wednesday at home against St. Thomas Aquinas, the Warriors led 3-2 after the third inning, but St. Thomas scored five runs in the next three innings for a 7-3 win over the host Warriors.
Carrollton’s three runs came on a three-run home run to left centerfield by Luke Starre in the third inning.
Senior Ronnie Hepner had a pair of singles for the Warriors, who finished with eight hits in the game.
“This was a frustrating game for us because we left 11 runners on base,” said head coach Gary Cogan. “We had eight hits and four walks and it seemed whenever we had people on base we just didn’t hit. Hopefully we will turn this around soon.”
Besides the eight hits and four walks the Warriors committed five errors in the game.
Jim DiMarzo had a pair of home runs for St. Thomas.
Thursday, the Warriors returned to NBC action at Canton South.
The lead changed hands several times. The Warriors tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out, two run home run by Starre following a hard single to left by Jeryd Wright, but the Wildcats scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to gain the 7-6 win.
“I was proud of the way we kept battling back against one of the top pitchers in the league,” Cogan said. “Our players played with a lot of enthusiasm and hopefully that will carry over to future games.”
Kristian Cross had a double and RBI for the Warriors, while Ben Atkinson added a triple and single and A. J. Atkinson a single and RBI. Carrollton finished with 11 hits in the game and five errors.
Matt Wilson got the win for the Wildcats. Jeryd Wright took the loss in relief of Starre.
Starre went the first 5 and 2/3 innings giving up eight hits, while striking out two and walking one.
The Warriors took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth.
South scored three in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-3 lead. Each team scored a run in the sixth. |
