Dover rolls over Warriors

Carrollton High School football Johnny Lowdermilk
Carrollton quarterback Johnny Lowdermilk looks downfield for an open receiver Thursday in Carrollton’s season opener at Dover. The senior signal-caller threw for 273 yards in the contest.

It was only the first game of the season for both teams, but the Dover Tornadoes looked to be in mid-season form as they rolled over the Carrollton Warriors 63-14 last Thursday night at Crater Stadium in Dover.

It was game No. 1,000 in the long history of Dover football.

The Tornadoes put the Warriors away early, scoring three times in the first six minutes and taking a 35-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Dover came out firing on all cylinders as they moved down field in just 69 seconds and scored on a 17-yard run by tailback Keith Johnson.

The Tornadoes scored again just 11-seconds later on a 33-yard pass, which was set up by an onside kick recovery by the Tornadoes and the rout was on.

Dover went up 49-0 before the Warriors got on the board.

At the 2:08 mark of the second quarter senior quarterback Johnny Lowdermilk hit senior wide receiver Robbie Smith with a 67-yard bomb to get the Warriors on the board. Junior kicker Ben Knotts added the point after.

The Warriors’ final score came in the third period when Lowdermilk and Smith hooked up again for a 9-yard connection with 7:04 left in the quarter.

Statistically, the Warrior numbers weren’t that bad. They finished with 397 yards of offense, while Dover finished with 649.

Lowdermilk led the Warriors on the ground with 33 yards on 11 carries, and Smith added 30. Lowdermilk connected on 16-of-26 passes for 273 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Smith led the Warrior receivers with seven catches for 170 yards.

For Dover, Johnson bulled his way for 169 yards on 17 carries and Swinderman hit on 24-of-36 passes for 380 yards.

Zahner set a new Dover school record for receiving yards in a game with 14 receptions for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

The Warriors will host East Liverpool Friday night in their home opener.
