Kevin Malone at State Wrestling championships
Carrollton’s Kevin Malone, who placed third at last weekend’s state wrestling tournament, squares off against Ian Jones of Painesville Harvey in second round action. Malone came away a 3-1 winner.

COLUMBUS - Senior Kevin Malone and freshman Joey Miller represented Carrollton at the 73rd annual State Wrestling Championships at Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University last weekend.

And, both wrestlers represented Carrollton well. Malone placed third in the 285-pound weight class and Miller seventh in the 103 class.

“We are very proud of both Kevin and Joey,” said head coach Ken Pasiuk. “Taking two to state and coming back with two place winners is very exciting for our program and our school.”
Malone won his first match on Thursday night with the quickest pin of the tournament. He took down Jared Easterday of Springfield Shawnee and pinned him in 27-seconds.

“Kevin has worked very hard this year to get to Columbus and to stand on the podium,” noted Pasiuk.  His goal was to stand on top, but after his loss in the semis he had to adjust them a little.  Placing third in the state at heavy weight and only losing to the state champ is a very respectful way to go out your last year.”

His next match on Friday morning was a little tougher. Malone recorded a two-point takedown in the last five-seconds of his match against Ian Jones of Painsville Harvey for a 3-1 win. Jones was the 2009 runner up at last year’s tournament.

The Warrior senior was knocked out of the championship bracket in the third round when he fell to Drew Carpenter of Thornville Sheridan 6-2. Carpenter advanced to capture the 285-pound championship.

Malone bounced back to win two matches on Saturday morning to place third. He defeated Danny Demick 3-1 of Chillicothe and took a 3-1 decision over Mike Rutherford of Norton.

Joey Miller at State Wrestling Championships
Warrior 103 pounder Joey Miller pinned Zach Walker from Napoleon in 2:07 in consolation first round action as he began his comeback for seventh place at the state’s top tournament.

Miller’s road to seventh place was a little tougher. He fell to Sean Fee from Mentor Lake Catholic 8-4 in opening action.

He then recovered in the consolation round to pin Zach Walker from Napoleon in 2:07. Next was another quick pin as Miller piined Austin Skaggs from New Richmond in 29-seconds.

He lost his bid for a third place finish when he fell to Tyler Price of Pataskala Licking Heights 8-3.

In his battle for seventh place, Miller defeated Kyle Lang from Norwalk 6-4.

“Joey is I believe only the second freshman to place at state from Carrollton,” Pasiuk said.  “He did a nice job controlling his nerve, being aggressive, and wrestling smart.”

Also in Division II, Minerva had three wrestlers in the tournament. Junior Micah Kullman placed sixth at 160 pounds, while 140 pounder  Zach Lutes won his opening match but dropped his next two. Scott Boyce, the Lions 152-pounder was eliminated as he lost his first two matches.

St. Pairs Graham won the overall team title going away with 223 points. Oak Harbor was second with 78.5 points, Lexington third with 58, Toledo Central Catholic fourth with 55 and Hunting Valley University School fifth with 50 points.

Carrollton and Claymont tied for 20th place with 24 points each. Minerva finished in 47th place with 10.5 points.
