Malvern officials remind residents of mailbox liability
FPS staff report
January 4, 2011
Snow and ice were the main topics of discussion at the final 2010 council meeting in Malvern.
Jim Cinson, superintendent of the village service department, noted they are not responsible for mailboxes not taken care of or put in correctly. Cinson explained the face of the mailbox must be back 18-inches from the curb in order for the mirror on the truck to clear when removing snow. “Mailboxes have been knocked down,” he stated, “because they are either not properly maintained or are too close to the curb. If the mirror on the truck hits a mailbox, repairs could cost anywhere from $500-$2,000 to repair.”
Emergency snow streets are Porter St., W. Main St., Reed St., and W. Grant St. Cinson reminded residents the parking ban ordinance requires parked vehicle be moved within 24 hours to finish snow removal. Vehicles not moved will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Cinson thanked Brown Twp. for removing ice from W. Grant St. due to a water leak. He thanked Ralph Castelucci and Bill Sheckler for their help during the water line breaks. Jim Bates, water superintendent, said the electric for the water department is Occupational Safety Hazard A updated and work will be done on Village Hall. Bates also noted all who helped fix water leaks did a good job. When the leaks happened the village was pumping 500,000 gallons of water per day.
He noted on a normal day only 240,000-260,000 gallons are pumped.
