Barnett joins staff at prosecutor’s

Carroll County Prosecuting Attorney Donald R. Burns Jr. has announced the appointment of a new Assistant Prosecuting Attorney effective this Thursday, Jan. 6, in the Prosecutor’s office.
Burns said the appointment of Atty. Steven D. Barnett was necessary to replace Chief Assistant Prosecutor John C. Childers who elected not to accept an appointment for 2011 after almost two decades of exemplary public service.
Prosecutor Burns said Barnett will handle criminal, Common Pleas and appeal cases. He is joined by Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Sean R. H. Smith, who handles Juvenile Court cases, and Christine Falconer, who handles cases in Carroll County Municipal Court.
A native of Carroll County, Atty. Barnett, 32, is a 1996 graduate of Carrollton High School and graduated with honors from Capital University Law School in January 2004 with a Juris Doctorate degree. His experience has included the private practice of law, Assistant Public Defender of the Carroll County Public Defender’s office, certified legal intern for the office of the Prosecuting Attorney of Carroll County, legal intern/clerk for the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney of Franklin County, Magistrate for the Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas Conservancy Court.
He is also a member of the Carroll County Board of Developmental Disabilities and an Adjunct Professor for Kent State University Stark Campus.
Barnett is admitted to the bar to practice law in the state of Ohio, before the U. S. Supreme Court, the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio.
Barnett said he will continue to practice law at his office at 130 Public Square in Carrollton, where he became a partner in the law firm of Campbell and Barnett in May 2004 until Dec. 31, 2008, when he became a sole general practitioner.
Barnett is being succeeded in the Carroll County Public Defender’s office by Atty. Stephen J. Kandle of Canton.
Atty. Barnett’s professional memberships include American, Ohio State, Carroll County, Tuscarawas County and Stark County Bar Associations, Carroll Lodge No. 124 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio of which he served as a Past Master in 2007, Minerva Chapter No. 123 Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Loyalty Council No. 146 Royal and Select Masons of Ohio and Massillon Commandery No. 4, Knights Templar of Ohio.
Barnett is also a member of the Farm Bureau, Associate member of the Ohio Township Association, Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department of which he serves as secretary of the Board of Trustees, Columbiana Fire Department Auxiliary and Grace Church in Columbiana.
He is a son of Fred Barnett Jr. of Mechanicstown and Sandra Newbold of Carrollton. Steve and his wife, Jennifer, have a son, Ryan, and reside in Canal Fulton.
