MINERVA: The Minerva Lions needed a win and some help to get into the OHSAA playoffs.

The Lions did their part.

Minerva scored a fourth quarter touchdown to gain a 14-10 come-from-behind win over rival Carrollton last Friday night.

With the loss, the Warriors end their season at 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference.

The help the Lions needed didn’t come. Minerva needed Warren JFK to defeat Cleveland Catholic Central. Cleveland scored a late touchdown to defeat JFK 22-20 last Saturday night. Minerva ends its season at 6-4 and ninth in their region. The top eight teams advanced to the playoffs.

The Warriors scored all of their points Friday in the third quarter. Carrollton’s Avery Wilson tackled Minerva quarterback Josey Riley in the end zone for a safety with 2:15 left in the period. They scored again with just seven-seconds left in the quarter on a 22-yard pass from junior quarterback Zade Deitz to senior Zach Allen. Deitz then ran in the two-point conversion to give the Warriors a 10-7 lead.

Minerva scored what would be the winning touchdown with 9:17 left in the final period on a 22-yard run by Minerva senior quarterback Josey Riley. Tyler Stewart added the point after for a 14-10 advantage.

On paper, the Warriors held a huge advantage. Carrollton held a 306-183 lead in total yards. They out-rushed the Lions 152-145 and held a huge advantage in passing yards, 154-38.

The Warriors also held a big advantage in a category they didn’t want to - penalties.

Carrollton was flagged 9 times for 73-yards, many at critical times.

Minerva was flagged just six times for 43-yards.

Deitz led the Warriors on the ground with 57-yards on 15 attempts, while junior Tyler Dodd added 46-yards on 10 carries. Allen chipped in with 36-yards on three carries.

For the Lions, Riley led the way with 75-yards on 16 carries and junior Dalton Hartshorn added 70-yards on 24 carries.
