Carrollton rolls over Minerva 70-43

FPS staff report

Carrollton High School boys basketball Stephen Ericksen
Stephen Ericksen goes up for a shot over Minerva senior Evan Forst in last Friday's game.

It was a standing room only crowd dressed in pink that saw the Carrollton Warriors cruise to a 70-43 win over visiting Minerva last Friday night in the annual Hoops for Hope game on senior night.

The Lions hung with the Warriors for a half.

Carrollton led 16-13 after the first quarter and 38-26 at halftime.

The Warriors cranked up their defense in the second half and held the Lions to just 17 points.

Minerva had no answer for senior Stephen Ericksen’s inside game. Ericksen powered his way to 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Senior Caleb Hartong kept the Warriors in the game in the first quarter as he hit his first four shots and scored 8 of the Warriors 13 first quarter points. Hartong finished with 14 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Senior Mirko Dobrijevic also hit double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds, while senior Jake Peterson added six points and four assists.

Shooting, the Warriors hit 29-of-56 action shots and 10-of-14 free throws. They finished with 31 rebounds, 14 offensive, and only four turnovers.

Minerva was led by junior Jantsen Locke with 16 points, 12 in the first half. Evan Frost added 10 points.

The Lions were just 15-of-37 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the line. They had 15 rebounds and nine turnovers.

In the junior varsity game, the Warriors rolled over the Lions 61-35.

The game was tied at 13-13 after the first quarter, but the Warriors began pulling away in the second quarter and led 27-19 at halftime and 46-25 going into the final frame.

Devon Hezoucky led the Warriors with 10 points, while Luke Clay and Tyler Krantz each added nine.

Last Saturday night in a makeup game, the Warriors hosted the Marlington Dukes.

A bad first half, where the ball just would not drop through the cylinder, spelled doom for Carrollton.

The Warriors scored the first four points of the contest, but could only muster 10 points in the first two quarters of play in the 59-50 Marlington win.

Carrollton had a big fourth period, outscoring the Dukes 28-16, but the comeback effort wasn’t enough.

The Warriors end their regular season with a fine record of 14-8 and 7-7 in NBC play.

Sophomore Zade Deitz paced the Warriors with 20 points, while Ericksen finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Marlington led 15-4 after the first quarter, 29-10 at halftime and 43-23 going into the final period.

Carrollton hit 17-of-65 action shots and 12-of-17 free throws.

For the Dukes, Micah Hall led the way with 15 points, while Chris Andrews added 14 and Lucas Strouble 10 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.

The Warriors will begin tournament play Feb. 26 at the Ohio University Eastern Campus Division II sectional at 6 p.m. against either Meadowbrook or Buckeye Local.
