Carrollton wrestlers can’t top West Branch in NBC mat battle of Warriors

FPS staff report

Carrollton High School wrestling
Carrollton senior Austin Bentley recorded a pin of Ian Sharp in 35 seconds last Thursday night at West Branch.

The West Branch Warriors took a huge step in securing their seventh straight Northeastern Buckeye Conference title by defeating visiting Carrollton last Thursday night 34-26 in front of a packed West Branch gym.

Both teams went into the match undefeated in the conference with the winner most likely winning the outright league championship.

The loss dropped Carrollton to 21-4 overall and 3-1 in the NBC.

“It was a very disappointing outcome,” said Carrollton Head Coach Ken Pasiuk. “We are very proud of our wrestlers for their fight and how they conducted themselves on the mat. There were some very exciting matches where our boys were pushed and we need that to reach our ultimate goal of getting to the state level.”

Carrollton started strong as senior Austin Bentley pinned Ian Sharp in just 34-seconds in the 220-pound match as the visitors took a 6-0 advantage.

It would be Carrollton’s only lead in the match.

However, that lead was short lived as West Branch won the next five matches to take a 19-6 lead.

Carrollton bounced back to win the next two matches.

Brenton Miller pinned A. J. O’Brian in 4:16 of the 132-pound match and Joey Knipp followed with a 6-0 decision over Arek Hively in the 138-pound bout to cut the West Branch lead to 19-15.

Trailing 25-15 going into the 152-pound match, Tristan Stallard recorded a 15-0 technical fall over Colton Brown, cutting the West Branch lead to 25-20.
West Branch won the next three faceoffs putting the match out of reach for Carrollton.
Carrollton’s Tyler Dodd won the final match of the night with a pin of Aaron Mohr in the 195-pound bout for the final score.

The Warriors will host Salem Thursday night. They will take part in the annual Top Gun Tournament Friday and Saturday at Alliance High School.

Next week, Carrollton will host State Dual Regional Meet and on Saturday they will take part in the West Holmes Invitational.
