Ron for Rosie keeps on growing

By Bob Evans
Sports Editor

Run for RosieIn just two short years, the “Run for Rosie” 5K Run/Walk has grown into one of the premier events in the area.

The race, which is run annually in honor of Roselyn Derby who passed away with cancer three years ago, has grown significantly over the last two years, so much that it is now part of the Subway Challenge.

The race will be run Saturday morning, June 29, at 8:30 a.m. at the Carroll County Fairgrounds as part of the annual Carroll County Relay for Life.

“This means growth,” said race director Tonya Howell. “The fact we have the opportunity to share Roselyn’s journey and what an inspiration she was to so many. We aren't just family and friends supporting the one we love; we are getting the opportunity to share it with the running world.

“We had RS Racing Systems time us last year, but this year it is the real deal and we hope to bring people from surrounding areas to our community. If races are good, you get a lot of professionals running them, especially from the medical fields.”

As of last week, registration was a bit slow with only 85 runners registered.

“That can be expected,” Howell said. “They like to see what the weather is going to be like and wait until closer to the date to register.

“The entire Carrollton football and soccer teams will participate in some way, either by running or helping. I would be willing to offer $15.00 per person registration for any sports team that sign up together, Carrollton, Malvern, Minerva.”

Cost is $20 if registered by June 19 and $25 through the day of the race.

All participants who are registered by the end of the day on June 19 will receive a t-shirt on race day. All other runners and same day registrations will receive a t-shirt on a first come, first serve basis as supply allows.

Race day registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m. underneath the grandstands. You can also register online at: www.rsracingsystems.com

All proceeds will be donated to the Carroll County Relay for Life in honor of Roselyn Derby.
