Over the past two seasons, the Carrollton Warriors and Alliance Aviators have dominated the Northeastern Buckeye Conference.
The Warriors and Aviators have won the last two NBC championships, both with perfect 14-0 league records.
Last Friday night, the two teams met on the Warriors’ home court and played a close and exciting game with the Aviators coming out on top 53-46.
The loss dropped the Warriors to 7-3 for the year and 3-2 in the NBC, while the Aviators improved to 7-3 and 4-1 in league play.
Canton South stands atop the league standing with a perfect 5-0 record after their 78-70 win over previously undefeated Salem Quakers last Friday night at Salem.
Senior Andrew Collins kept the Warriors in the game with his three-point shooting. Collins hit 6-of-12 three-point shots and finished with a team-high 19 points. Sophomore Zade Deitz followed Collins with 12 points, while senior Stephen Ericksen scored just six points, but grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
It was an uphill battle for the Warriors all night long. They trailed 18-13 after the first quarter, 26-24 at halftime and 42-37 going into the final period.
Shooting, Carrollton made 16-of-40 shots from the field and 6-of-12 free throws. They ended with 22 rebounds and just eight turnovers.
For the Aviators, junior J. J. Kukura led all scorers with a game-high 21 points. He was the only Aviator to score in double figures.
Junior Kordelle Phillips followed with nine points.
From the floor, Alliance connected on 23-of-51 shots and 5-of-6 free throws. They had 24 rebounds and only four turnovers.
In the junior varsity game, the Warriors just slipped past the Aviators 59-57. Carrollton led by as many as 15 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Aviators came flying back and tied the game at 55-55 with just under two-minutes to play. The Warriors outscored the Aviators 4-2 in the final minute to secure the win.
Luke Clay led 10 Warriors in the scoring column with 13 points and T. K. Krantz followed with nine points.
Freshman Jai Ron Brackett led the Aviators with 19 points.
The Warriors were to be at Canton South on Tuesday. They will travel to Minerva on Friday.
Next Friday, the Warriors will travel to Louisville and on Sunday they will take part in the Hoover Basketball Classic where they will play Orrville at 6 p.m.
