A half dozen years ago or so, 1995 Carrollon graduate Jerry Shafer was volunteering his time helping athletes at CHS.
Today he has the distinction of being one of the top high school track coaches in Colorado.
In May, prior to the Colorado State Track and Field Championships, Shafer was named Division 3A Coach of the Year by the Denver Post, after leading his Rifle High School boys track team to a very successful season.
Shafer’s 800 and 1,600 meter relay teams made the Class 3A first team and the Bears’ top pole vaulter and and hurdler were named to the honorable mention list by the Denver Post.
Shortly after that announcement, Jerry watched as his athletes combined effort at the State Championships garnered the 2011 Class 3A State Championship for Rifle High School.
Jerry, a 2005 graduate of Kent State University, is not only a popular and well liked coach at Rifle, but a popular social studies teacher at the school.
He is the son of Elaine and Jim Painting of Carrollton and Lee Shafer of Carrollton. His grandparents are Robert and Sara Amos of Mechanicstown and Willard and Wilma Shafer of Carrollton. |
