FPS staff report
March 17, 2014
Another excellent season came to an end for the Malvern boys basketball team last Tuesday night in the Division IV regional semifinal at the Canton Memorial Field House.
The Hornets started strong, but could not hold their momentum and fell to Richmond Heights 59-45 to end their season with an excellent record of 20-7.
Inside that record was a thrilling 62-59 District tournament win over Inter-Valley Conference rival Hiland. It broke a string of 14 straight losses to the Hawks.
Malvern started fast against Richmond Heights, taking an early 7-2 lead and bringing the Malvern faithful to their collective feet.
However, the Spartans closed the gap and trailed by only two points at the end of the first quarter 13-11 on a layup at the buzzer.
The Spartans took the lead for good at 16-15 early in the second frame and never trailed after that. They led 25-20 at the intermission.
Most figured it would be a battle between the big men in the middle, Malvern’s 6-foot-7 junior Mitch Loomis, and Richmond Heights 6-foot-8 junior Mike Parks.
It didn’t quite turn out that way. Malvern packed the middle in an effort to stop Parks, leaving the perimeter open. Spartan guards took advantage as they hit nine three pointers in the game.
Loomis got into early foul trouble, picking up his third foul midway through the second quarter.
Richmond Heights led by as much as 14 points in the third quarter, but the Hornets ended the third by cutting the Spartans’ lead in half at 41-33.
They got the Spartans lead down to 41-36 early in the fourth, but would get no closer.
Loomis led the Hornets with 11 points, while senior Trey Tucci added nine points before fouling out and freshman Jaret Majestic also hit for nine points.
Malvern finished with 16 field goals and went 9-for-14 from the line.
For the Spartans, who fell to St. Thomas Aquinas last Friday night in the regional final, Senior guard Sean Walker led the way with 19 points, including five three pointers. Senior Dontez Lockett added 14 points for the Spartans, who improved to 19-7 for the year
