The Carrollton wrestling team wrapped up a regular season with a thrilling 33-29 win over visiting Minerva last Thursday night.
The encounter was close throughout. It was not decided until the next to the last match of the night.
Connor Mosley pinned Luke Walter at the 1:36 mark of the 170-pound match giving the Warriors a seven-point advantage with one match left to wrestle.
“This was a great team win tonight,” said head coach Ken Pasiuk. “This was a fun and exciting match to watch and coach. All the kids wrestled with a lot of pride and class. Each one battled hard and wrestled for the team. Myself and the coaching staff could not be more proud of them.”
The Warriors finish with a dual meet record of 21-6 and finish second in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference with a 6-1 mark.
The 21 wins by the Warriors is a new school record.
Minerva placed third in the NBC with two losses.
West Branch was perfect in the league with a 7-0 record and won their sixth straight NBC title.
Besides Mosley’s pin, Carrollton recorded two other pins in the match. Micah Campbell (220) pinned Logan Fritz in just 41-seconds and C. J. Brady (106) pinned Josiah Hrusch in 4:46.
Joey Miller (120) won a 20-1 technical fall over Sammy Southers. Cody Stragan (138) won a 12-3 major decision over Jesse McGee. Austin Bentley (285) wrestled the most exciting match of the night, winning 3-1 over Jacob Smith in overtime.
Austin Brooks (152) also had a big win for the Warriors. Brooks won a 6-1 decision over Cainen Bryant.
The Warriors will begin their run for the State Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Buckeye Local Division II Sectional.
The top four individuals in each weight class will advance to the District Tournament at Heath High School next Friday and Saturday.
A total of 11 schools will be taking part in the tournament - Beaver Local, Buckeye Local, Carrollton, East Liverpool, Edison Local, Harrison Central, Indian Creek, John Glenn, Maysville, Philo, and Steubenville.
