Minerva school tax levy passes

FPS staff report

In the unofficial tally released last week, the Minerva Local School District 2.5-mill tax renewal for operating expenses was approved by 96 votes.

The unofficial results in the three-county area served by the Minerva Local School District included:

Carroll County - 165 For; 220 Against plus 35 absentee ballots and three walk-in votes which are to be counted in the official canvass.

Stark County - 562 For; 396 Against, which includes some absentee ballots included in the unofficial tally and some to be counted in the official canvass.

Columbiana County - 193 For; 208 Against.

In response to the unofficial passage, Minerva Local School Supt. Douglas Marrah said he is excited that the voters renewed the tax which provides $521,000 in annual revenue for the day-to-day operations of the school district, Supt. Marrah said school officials plan to provide the same educational opportunities for students as in the past.

Also approved by an 18.1% majority vote was a one-mill tax levy renewal for the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School District, which was approved by an unofficial districtwide vote of 5,980 For and 2,574 Against.
