Achievement report given at board meeting

FPS staff report

In an Achievement and Curriculum News report given at the May 13 meeting of the Carrollton Board of Education, it was noted 72 students in grades five, six, seven and eight from throughout the Carrollton Exempted Village School District qualified to participate in the 2008 Tuscarawas-Carroll-Harrison Math tournament.

Seventh and eighth graders from Bell-Herron Middle School and fifth and sixth graders competed May 12 and 15 at the Tuscarawas branch of Kent State University in New Philadelphia.

Mrs. Vonda Barnhart, mathematics instructor at Bell-Herron Middle School served as the district contact and accompanied the seventh and eighth grade students to the tournament, along with Gary Cogan.

Accompanying the fifth and sixth grade participants were Mrs. Kelly Matta, Todd English and Mrs. Abra Neeley, all teachers, along with Mrs. Rose Seck, curriculum director. The six areas of competition correlate to the state content standards.

An update was given on the Carrollton elementary's fourth grade students who presented a spring musical title “Ohio” May 20 in the Carrollton High School gym.

Under the direction of the classroom teachers (Joann Bodle, Debbie Douty, Darlene Smith and Lisa Turner), the students recited information about Ohio and sang numerous songs. One part of the program included the presentation of Ohio's famous people and inventors.

The students wore shirts which they decorated with the Ohio theme. The preparation for this activity integrated many areas of the curriculum and correlated to the fourth grade content standards.
