Minerva Local Education Association holds appreciation banquet

FPS staff report

The Minerva Local Education Association (MLEA) hosted their annual Appreciation banquet May 9 at Minerva United Methodist Church. Following the invocation given by Mike Zellers, approximately 50 members and their guests enjoyed a family style swiss steak and chicken dinner.

Minerva High School musical ensembles, under the direction of Deborah Tissot, provided the entertainment for the evening.

Members completing their first year of teaching in the Minerva Local School District were presented certificates. Those teachers are Aimee Davis, Allison Jeric, Lindsay Mann, Tracie McFerren, Janice Nieto and Lynda Palmer.

Longevity awards were presented to members completing 10, 20 and 30 years of service. Ten-year service pins were awarded to Mike Riley, Julie Rine and Carole Zeedrich. Twenty-year service pins were presented to Cathy Blitz, Cheryl Fockler and Jeff Kullman. Completing 30 years of service and receiving a pin were members Karen Beck and Liz Smith.

A special recognition award was presented to Karen Schonauer, in honor of her dedication to the students of the Minerva Local School District and in honor of her “going above and beyond” the requirements of her job. Karen received a certificate and a gift card to Borders.

The final award of the evening was the Golden Apple Award, which is designed to recognize excellence in the art of teaching. Nominations were submitted by community members, parents, faculty and students.

A total of 57 members were nominated for the Golden Apple Award with some members receiving multiple nominations. The eight voting members of the MLEA’s Teacher Appreciation Committee, two members from each building in the district, selected the winner.

Liz Smith, recipient of the 2006 Golden Apple Award, introduced the 2007 winner, Julie Hutchison, a teacher at Minerva Middle School, whose name is engraved on a traveling plaque that hangs in the school where the recipient teaches. She also received an individual trophy and a gift certificate to Staples.

Following the presentation, the MLEA president Teresa Craddock-Starr retired the 2006-07 Executive Committee and President-elect Niki Blazer installed the 2007-08 Executive Committee. Janis Marraccini, MLEA treasurer, selected the winning 50-50 ticket.
