A team of 8th grade mathletes from Carrollton's Bell-Herron Middle School won the regional finals of the 2006-07 MATHCOUNTS contest held Feb. 17 at Tuscarawas campus of Kent State University in New Philadelphia.

The winning team members were Doug Vanmeter, who was the top individual scorer; Luke Baker, Nick Torian and Ethan Wartluft.

They, along with Hannah Podratz, a student at Bell-Herron Middle school, will compete at the state MATHCOUNTS competition to be held March 10 at Columbus State Community College in Columbus.

Other members of the Bell-Herron regional competition team were Kyle Evans, who placed 9th individually; Justin White and Brady McClure, according to Mrs. Vonda Barnhart, the Bell-Herron MATHCOUNTS team advisor.

MATHCOUNTS is a combination math coaching and competition program and is sponsored locally by the Tuscarawas Valley Society of Professsional Engineers, Bair, Goodie and Associates, Bi-con Services, Buckeye Mineral Services, George Fiedler & Associates, Lauren International, W. E. Quicksall and Associates, Ward and Emler Surveying and Jack R. Youngs and Associates.

It is designed to answer the problem of declining math skills among students at the precollege level.
