Nine football coaching supplemental contracts withheld

By Don Rutledge
FPS Associate Editor

In a surprise move, nine football coaching supplemental contracts were withheld from approval of 56 supplemental contracts at the May 13 meeting of the Carrollton Board of Education.

On a motion of Board President Rose Kienzle, the Board voted 3-2 to exclude the nine contracts from the supplemental list for the 2008-09 school year. Voting for the motion to exclude the football contracts were Board Members Kienzle, Bonnie Little and Cory Lutton while Board Members Dr. Keith Burgett and Doug Frampton voted against the motion.

Both Burgett and Frampton said they felt coaches are underpaid for as much time, effort and dedication they put into coaching. School Supt. Kevin Spears also added "our coaches are underpaid as compared to area school districts, noting Canton South is about $5,000 higher".

In her remarks, Mrs. Kienzle said she would like to discuss the of number of coaching positions further with the school district's Athletic Director Mark Spears. "It's costing the school district $8,400 for football coaching assistants and that's why I'm proposing pulling off these nine positions at this time," Kienzle added.

The nine football coaching positions withheld from the approved supplemental list included the following:

Cody Shockey, Eric C. McCort and Andrew J. Mangun, all football varsity assistant coaches; Steven Sutton, freshman head football coach; Christopher Hawk, football assistant freshman coach; Rodney A. Wood, Darin W. Abel, Gregory Platt and Richard A. Moyer, all football middle school assistant coaches.
