Brown Local Superintendent lauds two Malvern PHD grads

The Brown Local Board of Education received some good news about two Malvern High School graduates at its June 16 meeting.

Brown Local School Supt. Connie Griffin told the Board two recent graduates have attained their Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) degrees after having graduated from Malvern High School.

Andrea DeDent, a 1998 graduate of Malvern High School, received her PHD degree in microbiology from the University of Chicago and Rob VanHorn, a 1997 Malvern High School graduate, has received his PHD degree in economics from Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN.

VanHorn currently has a fellowship at Duke University for the next year and he will then be teaching Economics at The University of Rhode Island, Griffin told the Board.

During their regular business meeting, the Board:

 APPROVED tuition reimbursement applications for Jeff Null, Katie Hannen, Dawn Kaufman, Barb Rossetti and Stephanie Shafer.

 ENTERED into a contract with Dragonfly Academy for the 2008-09 school year for the instruction of Brown Local students at cost of $195 per day.

 HIRED the following supplementals for the 2008-09 school year: Richard Harland, assistant girls basketball coach; Todd Phillips, assistant football coach; Don Wood, junior high football coach; Ted Majestic and Doug Wackerly, both assistant boys basketball coaches; Robin Sprague, assistant volleyball coach; Sudie Yoder, High School Student Activities Council; Stephanie Shafer, elementary Student Activities Council; Charm Woods, Doug Schmidt and Sandra Moeglin, all Licensed Professional District Committee.

 ACCEPTED an anonymous donation for the following items: 4-drawer filing cabinet, microphone, stand and accessories, hanging file folders, file folders, binders, magazine and pamphlet files, books for the library and miscellaneous books, puppets and games.

 AMENDED the contracts of Timothy Babiczuk, a social studies teacher, and Rebecca Kress, a computer technology instructor, to read continuing.

 HIRED Sue Rice as summer physical education teacher.

 APPROVED a $1,000 donation from the PTO to the Excellence Committee.

 APPROVED the payment of bills totaling $99,148.13.

 APPROVED appropriation adjustments for the 2007-08 school year totaling $7,931.

 APPROVED annual appropriations for fiscal year 2007 totaling $7,221,678.

 APPROVED a two-month moratorium on health insurance premiums for fiscal year 2009 for the months of August 2008 and January 2009 representing a savings of $150,000.

 APPROVED depository agreements with the following institutions for investments of Certificates of Deposits in the following amounts: Am Trust Bank of Cleveland, $96,000; CF Bank of Fairlawn, $99,000; Champaign National Bank, $99,000; Commerce National Bank, $99,000; Delaware County Bank, $99,000; National City Bank, $98,000; Old Fort Banking Company, $99,000, and a $250,000 agency fund with Federal National Mortgage.

 APPROVED obtaining insurances through Schools of Ohio Risk Sharing Authority for the 2008-09 school year for property insurance for an annual premium payment of $8,959 and fleet/liability insurance for $7,879.

 SET the next regular meeting for July 7 at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
