Sandy Valley board awards contracts for campus site work

Campus site work contracts for the construction of two new school buildings were approved by the Sandy Valley Local Board of Education at its Feb. 12 meeting.

They included:
- A contract awarded to LoopMaster International of Indianapolis, IN., for geothermal well fields and piping in the amount of $1,168,200.

- A separate contract awarded to Wood Electric of New Philadelphia for early site electrical, data and communications in the amount of $120,747.
- A contract to Newton Asphalt Paving of Strasburg for base course asphalt paving in the amount of $242,745.

The two new buildings - one for pre-kindergarten through grades 5, and another for grades 6-12 - are being constructed on the west side of the present Sandy Valley Junior-Senior High School off SR 800, west of Magnolia.

The Board passed a resolution approving a statement of probable construction cost and design development final documents for the two building projects related to the school district's Classroom Facilities project.

In other business, the Board:
- APPROVED a resolution to designate the Superintendent David Janofa or his designee and the district treasurer, Paul Lattavo, to act on the Board's behalf to change orders of the construction project. Change orders exceeding $25,000 are to require Board approval.

- APPROVED a temporary leave of absence from March 12 through May 31, 2007, for Jason Neading, an aide to special needs students.

- APPROVED the following teachers for the Ohio Graduation Test prep instruction at a rate of $20.38 per hour: Carol Butler, Diane Conner, Marie Dazey, Nichole Gordon-Coy, Scott Green, Lisa Grossi, Stephanie Irwin, Jeannette Jernigan, Suzanne Kail, Elizabeth Lampe, Renee Leslie, Timothy McBride, Nancy Miller, Allison Morris, Anthony Pentello, David Poteet, Brian Reidenbach, Gigi Somerville, Douglas Tucci, Joyce Warner and Kelly Weaver.

- APPROVED John Horwell as a bus driver for the 2006-07 school year.

- APPROVED the attendance of three Brown Local students, June Capalingo, Victoria Hilton and Faith Lowder, to attend Sandy Valley Local School for the 2006-07 school year through open enrollment.

- ADOPTED the 2007-08 school calendar designating the first day of school for students for Aug. 22.

- ACCEPTED the amounts and rates as determined by the Stark County Budget Commission and authorized the necessary tax levies and certification of them to the county auditor.

- VOTED to continue the current interdistrict open enrollment policy with contiguous school districts using the guidelines already set in place by Board policy.

- INCREASED the 2006-07 permanent appropriations as the result of the receipt of three grants as follows: $1,000 Martha Holden Jennings grant; $4,000 Literacy Improvement grant, and $1,433.77 Title II-D Technology grant.

- SET the next regular meeting for March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Waynesburg elementary school.
