Through the efforts of the Dellroy PTO, students
in kindergarten through grade 6 at Dellroy
elementary school enjoyed an Agriculture Adventure, a program provided by COSI on Wheels based in Columbus last Wednesday.
This exciting hands-on activity, which enhances the students' knowledge of the science of the agriculture industry, gave the students an opportunity to "milk" a cow and learn more about the dairy industry.
Two PTO Volunteers are shown with four 2nd graders while visiting the dairy station. From left are PTO Volunteer Gregg Harkless explaining a set of milkers to 2nd Grader Chauna McClain. Tracy Flanagan (kneeling), a PTO volunteer, watches as Eli Geiser tries his hand at "milking" a full-sized cow as Emily Brown and John Hyndman wait their turn.
The program consisted of a 45-minute interactive assembly followed by the exciting hands-on activities that engaged the students and encouraged the development of science process skills.
During the assembly, students learned about where our food and fibers come from, pH soil testing and use of simple machines in the processing of food.
School officials said these concepts tie in with science state standards and wellness activities promoted by the school district.
Health food choices were promoted as students made choices for a healthy lifestyle based on the USDA; MY Pyramid Food Groups.
Other hands-on activities included Fun with Fibers, Put Your Muscles to Work, Picture of a Healthy Me, Inherit the Farm, Product Pandemonium, got milk?, Soil Testing, Get Growing, Animal Farm and Planting.
A booklet of pre-visit activities and vocabulary was provided for teacher use in the classroom to prepare students for the event. |
