Fifth grade students at Carrollton elementary school have been involved in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program led by Carroll County Deputy Sheriff Jane Michel who is shown with four class representatives.
From left are Austin Volino, Curtis Moyer, Deputy Michel, Kaily Cosart and Brie Turkovich.
The program emphasizes how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence free lives. Deputy Michel is spending nine weeks teaching students about the hazards of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and the effects of bullying.
During each 45-minute session, Deputy Michel is assisted by "Daren the Lion", being held by her and Miss Cosart.
Daren helps bring up issues for the students to discuss. Students also get to hold and interact with Daren during program.
Daren also helps students develop strategies or ways to get out of situations that are potentially harmful. At the end of the nine-week program, students will have a graduation ceremony when hopefully they have the power to "just say no". |
