Edison board hires new teachers, administrators

FPS staff report

Three new teachers and two new school administrators were hired by the Edison Local Board of Education at its June 18 meeting.

Employed for the 2009-2010 school year were Leah Snyder, English teacher; Dan Hartman, Title teacher, and Sara Evans, a Preschool teacher.

Ron Sismondo, a former administrator at Indian Creek Schools, was employed as principal at Stanton elementary school on a three-year contract at a salary of $77,500.

Stephanie Blundon was hired as assistant principal at Springfield-Stanton Middle School on a three-year contract at an annual salary of $64,000.

The Board also approved a 5-cent hike in lunch prices for the 2009-2010 school year. The price of lunches for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade will increase from $2 to $2.05 and for students in grades 9-12 from $2.25 to $2.30. Adult lunches will cost $3.

The Board also approved two Resolutions of Necessity to place a permanent improvement tax levy and an emergency tax levy renewal on the November ballot.

The additional permanent improvement levy will amount to 2.75 mills, generating $950,000 annually, and the emergency tax levy renewal, which expires in 2010, is for 2.0 mills, generating $1,049,000.

In other business, the Board:
- APPROVED the following new starting and ending times for the 2009-2010 school year: Edison High School, 7:45 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.; Pleasant Hill and John Gregg, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Springfield Middle School (grades 5-8), 7:45 a.m. to 2:17 p.m., and Stanton Middle School (grades 6-8), 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

- ACCEPTED the retirement resignations of Margaret Hood, night building cleaner; Mary Kinsey, a teacher at Pleasant Hill school with 35 years of service; Marsha Whitla, a teacher at Stanton Middle School with 36 years of service, and Chris Frey, a teacher at Pleasant Hill school with 39 years of service.

- APPROVED supplemental contracts for the following certificated employees: Marc Sansone, assistant boys soccer coach; Rosann Groves, yearbook advisor, and Jamie Evans, senior class sponsor.

- APPROVED supplemental contracts for the following certificated employee: Leah Snyder, assistant softball coach, assistant volleyball coach and assistant girls basketball coach.

- APPROVED lists of substitute teachers and classified substitutes for the 2009-2010 school year.

- APPROVED Leslie Adamsky as summer speech therapist to be paid $875 from the Special Education fund.

- APPROVED a contract for occupational therapy services with the Jefferson County Educational Service Center (ESC).

- VOTED to release Brandon Svec for transportation purposes only to Indian Creek School district.

- APPROVED a revised Interagency agreement for 2009-2010 with HARCATUS Head Start.

- ADDED a revision to the Sunday practice policy which states if school or practice is canceled due to calamity days the decision will be made by the building principal.

- APPROVED a contract for an alternative school program with the Jefferson County ESC.

- APPROVED a bid from Farnham Company of Westerville for the purchase of 412 auditorium chairs at Edison High School for $25,250.

- HELD an executive session to discuss personnel with no action.

- SET the next regular meeting for July 16 at 7 p.m. at Stanton Middle School.

At a special meeting held June 17, the Board approved a temporary appropriations resolution for fiscal year 2010 of general fund expenditures totaling $6,240,000 and final appropriations for fiscal year 2009 in the amount of $20,537,826.
