Big changes are in the offing for the school lunch program in the Carrollton Exempted Village School District next school year.
At the April 14 meeting of the Carrollton Board of Education, the five-member Board voted 4-1 to advertise for and accept bids for pre-plated meals.
Voting No on the motion was Board Member Bonnie Little who said after the meeting she didn’t feel there was enough time to talk with different people about the change over from hot meals currently prepared in the school cafeteria to the pre-plated meals.
The packaged meals program was initiated last Sept. 22 at Augusta school where Preferred Meals Systems of Moosic, PA., served 119 meals for the 223 students on the first day at the school. The meals are shipped from Moosic, PA., to Augusta school where they are heated and served by a cook.
Next year’s revamping of school lunch program will result in the reduction of five cooks and a secretary, according to Mrs. Kitty Weir, Food Services supervisor for the school district.
“Actually, it will involve a total of six cooks, but we’re not replacing one who is retiring at the end of the school year,” she said.
Carrollton Schools Superintendent Palmer Fogler said the pre-plated meals will be served beginning with the 2009-2010 school year at Augusta, Dellroy and Carrollton elementary schools, along with Bell-Herron Middle School.
Hot lunches will be prepared and served in the Carrollton school cafeteria to Carrollton High School students in grades 9-12. However, the hot lunches will not include the same menu as in the past.
Mrs. Weir said the menu will basically remain the same each week. For example, Monday’s menu will be the same week after week, along with Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s.
To accommodate the new pre-plated meals program, Mrs. Weir said 1 cook each will be assigned to Augusta and Dellroy schools, two cooks at Bell-Herron where students will eat in the auditorium rather than crossing the street to eat in the school cafeteria, while four cooks will be retained in the cafeteria to help serve pre-plated meals to the elementary students and cook hot lunches for the high school students.
The net savings, according to School District Treasurer Roxanne Mazur, will be $70,000, which represents the increased cost of buying preferred meals and the cuts the school district is able to make.
