Phillips, Hartong named CHS Students of the Month

FPS staff report

Caleb Hartong and Mary Phillips have been named Students of the Month for March at Carrollton High School where both are seniors.

Son of Micah and Becky Hartong of 5212 Mountain Rd., Mechanicstown, Caleb is a four-year member of the football and basketball teams, both of which he was a two-year letterman and Scholar Athlete. He also is a four-year member of the FFA chapter and a two-year member of the National Honor Society at CHS.

Caleb, who is also a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, has a younger brother, Lane, a sophomore at CHS.

His hobbies include playing sports, hanging with his friends, girl friend and family. He says he also enjoys working on trucks and tractors as well.

Upon graduation, Caleb plans to attend The University of Akron and major in civil engineering. He says his career plans include getting a job in the engineering field with a good salary and hopefully some day owning his own company.

When asked what teacher, coach, family member or special friend has influenced him and why, Caleb said: My parents have been a huge influence in my life because they taught me to never stop working and to earn everything I get.

In offering advice for success in life, Caleb commented: Thomas Edison failed 2,000 times before creating the first light bulb, so never give up.

Miss Phillips, daughter of Terri Hull of 5975 Norco Rd., Carrolton, is involved in band and the speech and debate team. She also has been a stage hand for the CHS musicals and is involved in 4-H.

Her special hobbies include hanging out with her friends and helping anyone who needs it. This year she helped coach the speech team.

Upon graduation Mary plans to attend The University of Akron and work in international business while getting her masters degree in history.

When asked what teacher, coach, family member or special friend has influenced her and why, Mary replied: Mrs. Nuzz (Nuzzolillo) has been a huge influence on me because of all of the things she has done for the drama department and our speech team.

In offering advice for success in life, Mary said: Just be confident in who you are and remember if you get knocked down don’t stay down, stand up and keep moving forward.

As Students of the Month, both Caleb and Mary become eligible for a $500 scholarship to be awarded by Gateway Royalty at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year to one boy and one girl.

They also will have their pictures displayed in the showcase at CHS and will be treated to lunch by Carrollton High School Principal David Davis.
