FPS staff report
March 9, 2010
Fifth and sixth grade students in Mrs. Charlene Holloway’s social studies classes at Sherrodsville elementary school presented their first “Wax Museum” March 3 at the school.
Each of the 36 students represented a memorable individual who has lived or is still living who contributed to the fields of music, science, sports, politics, writing, explorers, inventors, famous women or some other significant role in history.
According to Mrs. Holloway, the students completed research questions and a graphic organizer with information applicable to their character. Each student created their own timeline with at least 5 significant dates and pictures. These same students took the information they learned and wrote a summary for their language art teacher.
Costumes and props were encouraged to be used in the Wax Museum to make their character more authentic.
Elementary students from the remaining classes at Sherrodsville attended the “museum” in the school gym last Wednesday morning, along with several parents. The visiting students pushed a “button’ on the hand of the character they wanted to learn more about.
The characters would then rise from their seat and give a short speech about who they are and why they are famous.
When the characters finished their speeches they would sit down and stay still until another visitor would come to hear them. Each character wore a name tag with their character’s picture and name on it. Students were scored on a rubric scale for their participation in the Wax Museum project, Mrs. Holloway said.
