Carrollton elementary, middle school students to be fed pre-packaged meals this coming school year

FPS staff report

In a marathon school board meeting Friday morning, the Carrollton Board of Education “zipped” through a four-page agenda in a total of 5 minutes!

Beginning this school year (2009-2010), all students district-wide - with the exception of high school students in grades 9-12 - will eat pre-packed lunches and breakfasts.

With only three of the five board members in attendance - which constituted a quorum - the Board voted 3-0 to enter into a contract with Preferred Meal Systems, Inc., based in Berkeley, IL., at a cost of $1.545 for each lunch and .919 cents for each breakfast.

According to school officials, the cost of lunches will receive a minimum of 5 cents credit for Carrollton schools commodities which will be signed over to Preferred Meal Systems. The final credit will be contingent upon what commodities and how many the company can utilize.

According to Carrollton Schools Treasurer Roxanne Mazur, the switch to packaged meals will save the Carrollton Exempted Village School District between $60,000 and $70,000 annually, plus the reduction of six cooks who will be paid July and August of this year.

The packaged meals will be provided to students at Carrollton, Dellroy and Augusta elementary schools and Bell-Herron Middle School. Students in grades 9-12 at Carrollton High School will be fed in the school cafeteria where meals will be prepared by school-employed cooks.

School lunch prices for students will remain at $2.50 and $2.75 for adult lunches.
