Ryan Geslak, a Carrollton High School junior enrolled in the Masonry program at Buckeye Career Center, was among students in the masonry lab who took on a special project this year of building a pizza oven.
“So many times people think of masonry as building a block basement or brick house,” commented Todd Bonvechio, masonry instructor. “Our students learn so much more. This year they laid up tile to design a large American flag on our classroom wall. We thought a pizza oven would be a fun way to show off the variety of skills they learn,” he added.
Superior Clay donated the clay components for the actual oven, Bonvechio pointed out.
Students in masonry place and finish concrete, build chimneys and fireplaces, read blueprints, become certified to operate heavy equipment, lay tile and stone in addition to block and brick. |
