To the Editor:
I have been closely associated with our school system for more than 25 years: first as a parent, then as a staff member and now as a retired community member. During that time I have seen many good things happen within the district. Sadly, things have often gone the other way. Often, this was caused by lack of adequate planning, following through and communication.
As word spread of the proposed changes to the Bell-Herron stage, I was dismayed and disappointed that the dreams, donations and labor given by so many people just 10 years ago would so callously be put to waste. After all, I had already seen this happen in the high school as the dedicated Fine Arts wing dissolved into classroom/storage space following Mr. Casper’s death.
After attending a meeting of the Fine Arts Boosters and speaking with both administration and board members, I believe an acceptable solution can be reached which will benefit the talented students who will use the stage in the future. However, this can only be accomplished through open communication, respect and a measure of trust, all of which have been severely lacking between (and within) the school district and community for many years.
I hope that, as a school district and community, together we can begin to constructively address both this issue and the many challenges that lie ahead.
