To the Editor:
These are tough times for everyone. Why are there two property tax renewal levies on the ballot this November, one for Brown Local Schools and one for the Carroll County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disability (MRDD)?
On the front page of the April 9, 2009, issue of The Free Press Standard from 1997/98 to 2007/08 the enrollment for Brown Local Schools dropped 24.5 percent, but they will receive an increase of $317,042 for fiscal year 2010 and $290,173 for fiscal year 2011 from the state (which is also taxpayer money - not manna from heaven - just in case you were wondering).
Brown Local Schools graduated a whopping 44 students this past May, yes 44.
If a business was losing customers at that rate would they continue to operate the same way or would they be making significant cuts?
Two-thirds of my property taxes already go to Brown Local Schools. Think about that for a minute.
It is also my understanding that MRDD is asking for their renewal levy even though they don’t need it at this time.
If you want your kids and your grandchildren to be able to buy a home in Ohio and if you want your parents and grandparents to be able to keep their land and home so that one day they can pass it along to you and so that you can afford to keep it, maybe you should think twice about the property taxes you’re paying in Carroll County and all of the taxes you’re paying in Ohio.
There is a reason people and jobs are fleeing Ohio. Gee, I wonder what it could be?
It’s about time to vote with logic and reason (i.e. your wallet or purse) not with emotion and sentiment, don’t ya think?
