Letters to the Editor

To the Editor,
On a good day school finance is a hard subject to understand even with all the correct information.  The average citizen, (I include myself in this category), needs a strong pot of coffee to even start this process.  Last week however, totally wrong information was reported as being presented at the School Finance and Building Committee meeting.  I hope you will take two minutes to finish reading this letter and become informed with the correct facts.

HB264 does NOT pay for any building improvements that do not save energy (electricity).  It will NOT pay for plumbing, infrastructure, roofs or electrical improvements.  Last week's article reported the exact OPPOSITE of what HB264 will do.  The only improvements HB264 WOULD pay for are weatherproof windows and doors, electric light fixtures and heating systems.

Also misreported was the treasurer's example of the school funding formula.  The numbers used in the example were not actual numbers from our district.  They were easy numbers to help illustrate how the formula works.  If you want to crunch the actual numbers at home we have available for you the packet of information that was reviewed at the meeting.  Please call me (I'm in the phone book) or stop by the board office and request a copy.  You may also call and speak with the treasurer, as she would be happy to discuss the funding formula with you using our district's real numbers.

I apologize to the public if my presentation at the committee meeting was so obscure and indistinct that it caused the misreporting of this vital information.  You, the public, pay the tax money that makes this school district run.  You have a right to be given the correct information and I am sorry if I wasn't able to communicate that.  I will try to express the facts more clearly at our next meeting.

Speaking of which, our next Finance and Building Committee meeting will be in June at a date TBA.  All meetings are open to the public, so please consider yourself invited.

Rose Kienzle
CEVSD Board President
