To the Editor:
This letter is in response to the article in last weeks paper concerning my pay raise for the lone employee at the Veterans Service Office.
I would first like to point out the money used to fund our office does not come from the general fund. Secondly, Commissioner Wheaton was correct in stating they are required by law to appropriate a full half mill for our office, which we have never received. In fact, this year they kept almost $80,000 of the money to be used for our veterans to operate the other county offices such as the Sheriff’s Dept.
I would also like to know how many of the Sheriff deputies have been employed by Carroll County for over 28 years.
There were many years this lone employee did not receive a raise at all, even when most other county employees did. Also, this lone county employee does the work that most of the other 88 county Veterans Service Offices have at least 20 employees to do.
I am getting close to retirement and that is one reason my board decided to give me a significant raise. Another, I hope, is because I try to do the best job possible for our veterans.
Shari Howells
Carroll County Veterans Service Officer
