To the Editor:
The first time we heard “God Made a Farmer” (think Superbowl commercial) we were milking cows in 1988 and listening to Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story”. After seeing the sale of the “God Made A Farmer” tee shirts in the FPS, I would like to share these thoughts:
The Ninth Day…and now you know the rest of the story!
And on the ninth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said. “I need a dedicated news reporter.” So God made Paul Harvey.
God said, “ I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, produce and deliver the morning news, work all day examining national and world news, deliver a news broadcast again, then go back to the typewriter and stay up past midnight to edit the Rest Of the Story.” So God made Paul Harvey.
God said, “ I need somebody willing to sit up all night watching a tragic event unfold to its unhappy end, and dry his eyes and report the story with hope for a better tomorrow. I need somebody who can shape a meaningful news segment from the bits and pieces provided by those who were there. Someone who can find the story of a better mankind in the seemingly insignificant actions of diverse ordinary people. Who, year in and year out, can put in his first 40 hour week by Tuesday noon and then ignoring writer’s cramp, put in another 72 hours.” So God made Paul Harvey.
God said, “ I need somebody strong enough to clean away the hype from an important story and then report the real meat of it, yet gentle enough to have compassion for those involved and all who hear him; and will take time to report a human interest story that he believes everyone needs to hear.” So God made Paul Harvey.
It had to be somebody who would look deep into the heart of the story, tell it straight and not cut corners. Someone to travel, dig, question, analyze and boil the information down to what was truly important. Somebody who would show America the importance of family and strength that comes from pulling together. Who would laugh, and then sigh, and reply with smiling eyes when his son says he wants to spend his life doing what Dad does.
So God made Paul Harvey.
