President Abraham Lincoln is quoted saying, “Freedom is the last, best hope of earth.” Do we really understand the concept of being free?

I suspect that the majority of us living in the United States, when reminded, feel the same way. We value our freedom; however, unless we are closely affected by someone who is currently or has previously served in one of the armed forces, we fail to consider this gift as more than merely routine.

I have the privilege to invite you, our community, to an amazing event Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Carrollton High School Choirs will present the cantata, FREEDOM- A Salute to American Liberty” at 7 p.m. in the CHS gymnasium. It presents an opportunity for our CHS students to join together with you to reflect, to celebrate and to honor this ideal for which so many have sacrificed their lives.

It serves as a wonderful reminder that freedom is highly desired by nations around the world. It points to the sobering truth that freedom is always costly, always comes out of sacrifice, and it should never be taken for granted.

The cantata focuses on the vision our founding fathers had for a country built upon principles whereby every individual has the opportunity for prosperity. In January, 1941, President Roosevelt addressed our nation outlining the following four ideas: 1. The freedom of speech and expression; 2. the freedom of every person to worship God in his own way. 3. the freedom from want, and 4. the freedom from fear.

In an effort to regenerate the awareness, support demonstration of gratitude and testimony to the brave men and women who have fought and continue to stand against foe in the name of FREEDOM, the CHS Choirs proudly present this message.

I sincerely hope that every veteran, every active and reserve service man and woman and their family members will accept this invitation to allow us to say thank you in the best offering we have. It is our hope that our community will join us on Oct. 27 to pay honor those who serve with dedication and on our behalf.

May we refuse to ever take our freedom for granted. May we always be mindful that with the privilege of freedom comes great responsibility. Freedom is not a license to do what we please, but a moral obligation to do what is right.

May we forever keep the light of freedom burning, in this nation, in all nations, today and forever. The words of Abraham Lincoln have never been truer.
Freedom is the last, best hope of earth.

With deep sincerity,
Mindy D. Domer
CHS Director of Vocal Music
