To the Editor:
In reference to your recent guest commentary, the Battle for Public Opinion, just the title should be a concern. This suggests there is a struggle to bring public opinion in line with a certain mindset. How about just reporting the facts as they are and let the public form its own opinion? The article uses a lot of big words and clever phrases to describe the propaganda mechanism in place in our country. Keep in mind Hitler could not have accomplished what he did without propaganda. I have read that propaganda is more sophisticated today than anytime in history. The old saying “what you don’t know won’t hurt you,” should be “it’s what you think you know that isn’t so that will hurt you.”
He refers to the attempt to win Muslim hearts and minds. In the last couple of decades our military muscle and equipment have been responsible for tens of thousands of Muslim deaths; women, children, grandparents, etc. This hardly seems the way to win hearts and minds.
The idea that the tide of history is on our side is puzzling. According to what I’ve read, Alexander the Great, Great Britain and Russia have all tried to conquer Afghanistan and failed. We have nothing to gain from these military interventions. We spend more on military than all the other countries of the world combined and it is in the process of destroying our economy.
