To the Editor:
I am an only child and I grew up in a small home in the city of Akron with my dad and mom. When I was able to read, my grandparents started a collection of Golden Books of my very own. We had a drawer in our kitchen that I kept them in. On cold winter nights as my mom did the dishes, I would sit next to the register and read my books out loud to her.
Thus, my love for the gift of books began.
When I grew up to be a mom, I also shared the gift of books with our sons, and our local library. As your kids do today, when we lived in Green, they also were a part of their summer reading program and never missed an activity.
Our libraries all across the world open many doors of entertainment for people of all ages, and it is freely given. When I first started writing Sherry’s Book Corner, one of the requirements was that the books could be available at our library. I have followed that order since I began writing my columns in 1998.
When all else fails in life, a book can become a best friend. And the building and it’s people who represent these available tools are one in the same. Next time you go into the library, check out the photo of Governor Strickland as he holds a book in his hand, and the statement above his head says...READ.
When you think about it, was the statement above just empty words?
