To the Editor:
Close our public library? June 30, 2009, may become one of the most important life changing days of your life and you do not even realize it! Of course how could you? Governor Ted Strickland buried in his current budget proposal, his desire to cut the budgets of Ohio Public Libraries by nearly 50 percent. The Carroll County District library, as we know it, will be gone.
I do not speak for our library, where I have the privilege of working, but from my own heart. Many a morning, patrons are waiting for the doors to open and most evenings we are reminding patrons the doors need to be locked. They come seeking what? The meaning of the names they have chosen for their new baby? A quote to use for mother’s funeral service or perhaps plans for a landscaping project. Maybe they need a tax form the IRS seems not to send out anymore or wireless Internet because they are here visiting their parents who have that crazy dial-up service and they can’t download the latest pictures of the grandkids. Or, maybe they just need the schedule for the worm races being held this week as part of the summer programs for the family.
Whether you use the library or not, it’s here, it’s available for you and it’s one of the last FREE resources for all citizens. The mission statement of our library reads: It is the goal of the Carroll County District Library to make readily available to the greatest number of the county residents the most wanted materials, print and non-print which will meet the educational, recreational, informational and cultural needs of the community; and provide services at an affordable cost.
When I go home from work this evening, I’ll spend the evening with Eric Clapton, Nora Jones and Brad Paisley. I’ll whip up a new recipe, dream up a new color scheme from home remodeling books and maybe do a little sailing as I search for Moby Dick.
Call or e-mail Representative Mark Okey, Senator Joseph Schiavoni and Governor Strickland today.
