Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor:
Have you ever heard these words spoken to you or a loved one, “You have been diagnosed with cancer?”  Between my family and my husband’s family we have heard these words too many times. In fact, 20 people in our families have lost their lives to cancer.
I have been an advocate and volunteer for the American Cancer Society in their mission to save lives. When asked if I would help with a national research study I gladly accepted. Mostly because I want to help find what causes cancer and how we can prevent it for future generations.
Research breakthroughs like those funded by the American Cancer Society must continue so our families and other families won’t have to hear those dreaded words in the future. That’s why I am now helping to enroll people in the Cancer Prevention Study called CPS-3.
I strongly encourage you to take part in this important study by enrolling on Friday, June 18, at Indian Creek High School’s Robert S. Kettlewell Stadium, 200 Park Drive in Wintersville, during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event. Registration for CPS-3 will be from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
This is a once in a lifetime chance for you to be part of a national study that is collecting data from a half million people across the United States.  Isn’t a little bit of your time worth the possibility of saving lives?
To qualify for CPS-3 you cannot have or have had cancer, must be between the ages of 30 - 65, be willing to answer questionnaires every two years that are mailed to you for the next 20 -30 years, allow a trained phlebotomist to draw a small sample of your blood, and have your waist measured.
All information and data collected is confidential. It will be used to learn more about ways to prevent or reduce a person’s risk of cancer. It is vital for people to enroll so progress against cancer may continue.
To learn more about the study you may call toll free at 1-888-604-5888, or visit the website at www.cancer.org/cps3.
Hopefully, I can count on you to register for this historic cancer research study that will help to save lives and give people more of their most precious resource:  time.  If people have more time to spend with their families and friends, that means more memories, more celebrations...and ultimately more birthdays.
