To the Editor:
As Mr. Wheaton noted, agriculture is the largest industry in Carroll County and provides many jobs. I was saddened that the county commissioners eliminated and cut funding to the two agriculture support agencies – OSU Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service and the Carroll Soil and Water Conservation Service.
Did we forget about 4-H? Perhaps the commissioners feel it is more worthwhile supporting children in the detention center than in 4-H. I do not advocate cutting Tobin’s budget, but maybe it would be just as productive to teach our children higher morals and life skills.
What are we thinking? The Agriculture Extension Service has helped make it possible for three percent of the population to feed this country and one-half of the world. The extension service brings new agriculture production sciences to the famers so they can put this knowledge to good use. I hope this budget was not made with a mouthful of food.
How important is topsoil and clean air? We cannot live without water. Topsoil is needed to raise our food. Soil and Water Conservation’s job is to protect our water supply and help prevent erosion.
I have done agriculture projects in other countries and our Cooperative Extension Service is the envy of the world. To feed the world, we need to double our food production by 2050. Can we do this by going backwards?
