Arthur Hayden "Dick" Lewis

Arthur Haydn "Dick" LewisArthur Haydn "Dick" Lewis, age 94, of the Leesville area, went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, March 13, 2008 in his residence.

Art was born October 30, 1913 in Cwmbach, South Wales, and was the son of the late Arthur G. Lewis and Sarah Ann Williams Thomas Lewis Kempthorne.  He arrived in this country as a boy of nine years of age on the ship U.S.S. Aquatania with his mother Sarah (Sadie) and his stepfather John Kempthorne.  He attended Sherrodsville High School, but quit as a junior to work on the Kempthorne farm located between Sherrodsville and Leavittsville.  He met the love of his life Josephine in school and married her on April 30, 1938.

He is survived by his daughter Sue Ann Cooper of Sherrodsville and his son Arthur J. Lewis of Jewett, O., his four grandsons Kent (Kelli) Lewis of Leesville, Kevin (Gina) Lewis of Hopedale, O., Patrick (Alice) Cooper of Sherrodsville, and Timothy Cooper of Massillon, O., his 14 great- grandchildren Dusty (Sabra) Conley of Ashland, KY, Christina Lewis and fiancé Joe Pallo of Windber, PA, Kimberly Lewis of St. Clairsville, O., Krystal and Cali Lewis of Hopedale, U.S. Marine Kyle (Tara) Lewis of Iraq, Kasey and Karly Jo Lewis of New Philadelphia, O., Hunter Lewis of Leesville, Alisha, Josey, Andrew and Lucy Cooper, all of Sherrodsville, and Shawn Cooper of Kent, O., and his two great-great-grandchildren Braden Miller of Mineral City, O., and Hayden Lewis of Mississippi, a niece Audrey Griffith, great-niece Kathryn Brake and her children Luke, Daniel and Kate O'Callaghan of South Wales, his sisters-in-law Thelma Whitehair, Donna Anderson, and Doris Moughiman, all of Sherrodsville, and his favorite cats Oz, Babe, and Minnie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine E.  "Jo" Moughiman Lewis, who died April 22, 1997, an infant son William Daniel Lewis, a granddaughter Kelly Renee Lewis and a son-in-law Troy D. Cooper, a sister Mattie Thomas and her husband Gilbert, his brother and sister-in-law Dan and Rene Thomas, a nephew Ted Griffith, several step-brothers and step-sisters including Roxie Stratton and Dells Kempthorne, both of this area.

He retired from the Gradall Company at New Philadelphia in 1976.  In lieu of military service, he attended the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp and worked on several projects, including the Atwood Dam.  Art was an All-County basketball player for Sherrodsville High School his junior year.  He was a member of the Faith Community Chapel at Leesville and was a charter member of the original Sherrodsville Volunteer Fire Department and an honorary member of Sherrodsville Community Fire and Rescue.  He was also a part-time farmer and raised white-faced cattle.

Funeral services were conducted March 17 in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Doug Mallernee officiating.  Interment followed in Leavittsville Cemetery.

Art's family would like the opportunity to thank all of his special caregivers, family members, and hospice representatives for all of their recent kindnesses.
