Robert "Bob" Vahalik

Robert "Bob" Vahalik, 81, of County Rd. 61, Amsterdam died Friday morning, Jan. 28, 2011, in Dixon Healthcare Center following an extended illness.

Born July 2, 1929, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Stefan and Mary Gritser Vahalik.

He was a retired farmer and letter carrier for the Amsterdam Post Office.  He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amsterdam and was ardent fan of Notre Dame collegiate sports.  He was known as "Silo Man."

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Mary Gooderl, whom he married Nov. 28, 1953; five sons, Robert (Barbara) Vahalik of Columbus, Tom (Diane) Vahalik of Amsterdam, Michael Vahalik of New Philadelphia, Anthony Vahalik of Massillon and Ed (Shelly) Vahalik of Richmond; a daughter, Anna Lee (Thomas) Kemp of Findlay; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a brother, Joe Vahalik of Amsterdam.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

A memorial mass in Bob's honor will be held Saturday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Jack McCoy officiating.  Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. in Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Amsterdam.  Interment will be in Bergholz Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made in Bob's name to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amsterdam, 43903.  Bob's funeral services were under the care and guidance of Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Amsterdam.
