Roy "Jim" Erwin

Roy "Jim" Erwin, age 80, of Scio and Hickory, NC, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at his home after a brief illness surrounded by his family.

Born Feb. 16, 1930, at the family home near Scio, he was a son of the late Roy and Mary Beckley Erwin.

He served in the Army from 1951-1953 then enlisted in the Army Reserves serving with the 660th in Cadiz for 30 years. He worked for Drexel Refractories, formerly Carroll Clay, in Carrollton and Matthews Construction in Conover, NC, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Vo-Ash Chapel near Carrollton, Faith Baptist Church in Hickory, NC, and the Scio American Legion Post 482. For fun he and his family showed two teams of pulling ponies for six years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling, but most of all he enjoyed his family and grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Cooper Erwin, whom he married May 2, 1954; four children, Crystal McCubbin of Conover, NC, Carl (Karen) Erwin of Hickory, NC, Helen Erwin of Bowerston and Rhonda Fine of Boise, ID; two brothers Lewis "Short" Erwin of Carrollton and John Erwin of Scio; a sister, Nora Manbeck of Scio; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Erwin, a grandson and a niece.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Koch Funeral Home, Scio with Rev. Tom Maley officiating. Burial will follow in Perrysville Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Carroll Co, Vo-Ash Chapel, and Scio American Legion Post 482.
