Edward R. Thompson

Edward R. Thompson, 83, of Salineville passed away Nov. 27, 2010, at Blossom Nursing Home in Salem.

Born Oct. 16, 1927, in Salineville, he was the son of the late William E. Thompson and Florence Gross Whipkey.

He attended school at Salineville and Malvern and graduated from Southern Local High School in 2002 under an Ohio law authorizing issuance of diplomas to World War II veterans who were unable to graduate due to active duty.

He was employed at Madison Hardware from October 1950 - January 1972.  In January 1972, he purchased the store, which he operated as Thompson's True Value until the store's closing in September 1994.

He was a WWII veteran of the United States Air Force serving at the end of the war on the island of Kwajalein in the South Pacific which he entered April 5, 1946, and was discharged April 1949.

He was an active member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church where he was a trustee and a Sunday school superintendent.  He was a member of Salineville Kiwanis, F&AM 348 of Salineville, Scottish Rite of the Valley of Steubenville, American Legion John Adams Post 442, VFW of Washingtonville, Blinded Veteran's Association, and past board member of Southern Local Schools.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Griffith Thompson, who he married July 29, 1951, and had 59 wonderful years together; a daughter, Lilla Rae (Henry) Singleton of Williamsburg, VA; a son Tom (Chris) Thompson of Salineville; two sisters, Gilda Willison of Dalton and Leah Brown of Canton; four granddaughters, Jamie (Keith) McNeeley of Williamsburg, VA, Megan (Jamie) Tyson of Richmond, VA, Ashley (Justin) Shilot and Amanda Thompson, both of Boardman; and two great granddaughters, Gracie and Harper.

Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. in Kerr-Pastore Funeral Home with graveside services with the John Adams Post 442 American Legion Honor Guard.  Pastor Mary Anne Frischkorn of Calvary United Presbyterian Church will officiate assisted by Pastor Tom Allmon of Bethesda Presbyterian Church.  Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, Nov. 30 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Masonic services at 6 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salineville Kiwanis Building Fund, c/o Oscar Gartrell, 15 North St., Salineville, 43945.  Online condolences may be sent at www.kpwfh.com.
